The Therapy

What is Deep TMS?

A breakthrough, FDA-cleared treatment that uses targeted magnetic pulses to stimulate the brain regions associated with mood — no medication, no surgery, no sedation.

Non-Invasive

Like an MRI, Deep TMS uses gentle magnetic fields to stimulate the mood-regulating regions of the brain — completely from the outside.

Highly Effective

Nearly 50% of patients find relief during treatment. Up to 80% report significant symptom reduction by the time their treatment plan concludes.

No Side Effects

Unlike medication, Deep TMS carries no systemic side effects. You remain fully awake and can return to your normal routine immediately after each session.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about Deep TMS therapy at NeuroCareTMS — answered clearly and honestly.

Deep TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) is a non-invasive, FDA-cleared therapy that uses magnetic fields — similar to those in an MRI — to stimulate the brain regions associated with mood regulation. You sit comfortably in a chair while a technician fits you with a specialty helmet containing an H-shaped coil. This coil delivers brief magnetic pulses that target nerve cells deep in brain tissue, gradually rebalancing the abnormal brain structures that contribute to depression and other conditions. No medication, no surgery, no sedation required.
During treatment you will feel a gentle tapping sensation on your scalp from the magnetic pulses. While it's unusual, some patients experience brief, mild headaches or local scalp sensitivity — especially in the first few sessions — which typically goes away quickly and can be relieved with over-the-counter pain relievers. The vast majority of patients tolerate it very well. You can listen to music, read, watch TV, browse your phone, or use a device the entire time. After your session, you're free to drive yourself home or return to work immediately.
Your first session is longer — up to one hour — as our team performs brain mapping to precisely calibrate the treatment to your brain. After that, each session runs approximately 20 minutes. A standard course is five sessions per week for about four weeks, followed by maintenance sessions on a less frequent schedule in subsequent weeks. Most patients begin noticing meaningful improvements mid-way through treatment, though some notice changes earlier or later. Results vary by individual, and our team monitors your progress closely throughout.
Deep TMS has no systemic side effects — unlike antidepressant medications, which can cause weight gain, sexual dysfunction, nausea, and dry mouth, or ECT, which can cause memory loss and requires hospitalization. The only reported side effects are localized: occasional mild scalp discomfort or a brief headache during the first few sessions, which typically improves quickly. There is no impact on cognition, memory, or normal brain function. You will not require sedation, and there is no recovery period.
Deep TMS is highly effective — particularly for patients who have not responded to antidepressant medications. Clinical research across more than 60 worldwide trials shows that nearly 50% of patients experience significant relief during treatment itself, and up to 80% report meaningful reduction in depressive symptoms by the end of their full course. One of Deep TMS's greatest advantages is its low rate of symptom recurrence after treatment concludes. Many patients describe feeling like "their cloud has lifted" — often permanently.
Deep TMS is especially well-suited for adults with Major Depressive Disorder, OCD, PTSD, Bipolar Depression, or Dysthymia — particularly those who have tried antidepressant medications without satisfactory results. An NIH-sponsored study found that 63% of major depression patients do not respond to their first antidepressant medication, and 33% don't respond to any medication at all. If that sounds like you, Deep TMS may be the breakthrough you've been looking for. Our free consultation will help determine if it's the right fit for your specific situation.
Yes — NeuroCareTMS accepts Medicare and most major insurance carriers. Deep TMS for Major Depressive Disorder is FDA-cleared and recognized as medically necessary by most insurers, making coverage widely available. Coverage eligibility typically requires a confirmed diagnosis and documented history of antidepressant medications that haven't provided adequate relief. Our team handles the insurance verification process for you and will walk you through any co-pays or coverage details before treatment begins — so there are never any surprises.
No — you do not need to stop your current medications to undergo Deep TMS. In fact, we generally recommend keeping your current medication regimen stable during treatment so we can more accurately measure your progress from the TMS itself. Some patients are able to reduce or discontinue medications after a successful course of Deep TMS — but that decision is always made in coordination with your prescribing physician, not unilaterally. Our team will review your complete medication history at your free consultation.
Results vary by individual. Many patients experience lasting relief that extends well beyond the treatment period — some indefinitely. For those who notice symptoms returning, a second course of Deep TMS is always an option and typically produces results as good or even better than the first round. One of Deep TMS's most notable advantages over medications is its low rate of recurring symptoms after a successful course of treatment. Our team stays in touch with you after treatment to monitor your progress and plan any follow-up care needed.
